How to get cycling in London

Take a cycling lesson

London has a range of affordable and even free cycling lessons for all ability levels. Whether you’re completely new to cycling or looking for a refresher course, there’s something to suit your needs. If you’re looking to take part and have a lesson specifically for riding an ebike, Forest often run events in partnership with local councils to help you feel confident when hitting the road. Can’t see any classes in your area? Get in touch with your local council and let’s see what we can do!

Follow the rules of the road

Always follow the highway code by stopping at red lights, give way at pedestrian crossings, and stay alert to other road users. We always recommend cyclists get familiar with the highway code, and you can find out more tips in our how to cycle safely guide.

Choose quieter roads

When you’re getting started, stick to quieter streets until you build up confidence. Navigation apps like City Mapper or Google maps offer the best cycle routes that often avoid busy roads or prioritise routes with cycle lanes. If you’re using a Forest bike, make use of our built-in phone holder for easy navigation.

Wear the right kit

Ensuring you're comfortable and visible when cycling should always be your top priority. Forest bikes are fitted with lights and reflective surfaces to make you easily visible, but if you’re riding your own bike, ensure you have fully charged lights and reflectors.

We always recommend wearing a helmet and packing something reflective to wear / pop on your bag to make yourself visible to other road users.

The weather in London is notoriously unpredictable, so we also recommend investing in a waterproof jacket that you can pack just in case, as well as a pair of good winter gloves for colder weather.

Ride with others

Cycling for the first time (or maybe after a long break) may feel a little daunting. There’s lots of cycling clubs in London, so look up ones in your local area to get started.

Check your bike before riding

Whether it’s your own bike or a shared bike rental service like Forest bikes, check if the bike is in good condition before you start your journey. Make sure:

  • Your tyres are fully inflated
  • The breaks work correctly
  • The pedals are secures
  • The seat is firmly fastened

Park responsibly

Avoid parking in the way of driveways, entrances, paths and roads, and always avoid blocking pavements. As a rule of thumb, always ensure there’s enough room for a pram or wheelchair to pass. If you’re using your own bike, make sure to use a good quality lock and to remove any valuables from your bike (e.g. lights or bike bags).

Final thoughts

Cycling in London is truly one of the best, fastest and greenest ways to get around the city (and that isn’t just us saying that as a bike company). With a little preparation, even complete novices can enjoy the benefits of cycling.
